An AI skill is a folder of plain-English instructions that an assistant like Claude opens only when a job calls for it. Anthropic describes skills as folders of instructions, scripts, and resources that Claude loads dynamically. For a small business it is how you write a quote, saved once, including the lines it must leave blank.

The water heater is going into a bungalow in Dutchtown, which is the city, but last week’s job was over the line in the county, and the one before sat inside some fire district you couldn’t name. The laptop fan whines. The coffee grows a skin. It is the third quote this week built out of the last one.
That isn’t a flaw in you. It’s a job that never got written down, so it gets rebuilt every time, and the tax line is the part that bites. St. Louis has run the city and the county as separate governments since the 1876 vote often called the Great Divorce. Missouri’s Department of Revenue says cities and counties may add a local sales tax and special taxing districts, fire districts among them, may add more. Local changes take effect on the first day of a calendar quarter, January, April, July or October, and the state keeps an address-by-address lookup because the right number depends on where the job is.
So the smartest thing you can teach an AI about that line is to leave it blank.
That is the whole idea of an AI skill. Not a robot that knows everything. A page of plain English that says how you write the quote, what it must never guess, and what a good one looks like. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, calls it a skill. Who gains when you believe it takes a developer? The people who would charge to “set up your AI.” It doesn’t. Every product fact below comes from Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s own help pages, not from a video thumbnail.
What is an AI skill?
A skill is a folder with one required file inside it, a text file called SKILL.md. At the top of that file sit two labels, a name and a description. Below them, in ordinary sentences, goes whatever you would tell a new hire. Anthropic’s developer docs describe the whole arrangement as organized like an onboarding guide you would create for a new team member. Here is the one for that water-heater job. Nothing in it is code:

Open with the customer’s first name. List the work in the order we would do it. Never guess a price or a tax rate. Leave the tax line blank, write “look up by job address,” and ask me which side of the city line the job is on. Close with how long the quote holds and one line about the warranty. Keep it to a page.
Here is what separates that from pasting instructions into a chat. Claude does not haul the whole folder around. When it starts up it loads only each skill’s name and description, about 100 tokens per skill by the docs’ count, a few sentences’ worth, and it opens the rest of the file only when your request matches. The description is the doorbell. Ring it with the right words and the whole page walks in.
The whole method fits in four sentences. Do the job once with Claude the ordinary way, with a real quote of yours pasted in. Fix the draft until it sounds like you. Then type: create a skill that captures this. Zip what it hands you, upload it, and test it on three real jobs.
Which plan has skills? Anthropic’s two pages give two answers
It is late. The Department of Revenue’s rate lookup is open in one tab, Claude’s settings in the other, and the button you were promised is not where the page says it is. Open Anthropic’s help center and you’ll read that for the Max, Pro and Free plans you can upload your own skills in Customize, then Skills. Open the developer docs, the paragraph about claude.ai, and uploading custom skills is listed for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free sits on one page and not the other, and nothing on either settles which list your account is on.
So check your own screen. On Free, Pro and Max the help center says to turn on code execution and file creation under Settings, then Capabilities, and then look for Skills under Customize. If the upload option is there, everything below works for you. If it isn’t, you have lost nothing, because the skill you write is a plain text file you can keep for the day your plan catches up. The menu names have moved around between Anthropic’s pages, so hunt for the word Skills rather than a fixed path.
Is a skill just a Project, a custom GPT or a saved prompt?
Four things look alike and are not. A Claude Project is the binder on the shelf. Anthropic says Projects provide static background knowledge that is always loaded when you start a chat inside one, while skills are task-specific and only load when relevant. The binder holds who you are: the salon on Cherokee Street, the neighborhoods you serve, what you sell. The skill is the laminated card you pull out when the job comes up.
A custom GPT is OpenAI’s version of a saved setup. OpenAI’s help center says it is planning to retire custom GPTs and move creators to plugins, and that under the migration the GPT’s instructions become a skill inside the new plugin. A second OpenAI page says new GPT creation and publishing are not available on personal accounts, Free, Go, Plus or Pro. So here is the line worth repeating at the supply counter: the word skill now shows up in both companies’ products. Learn to write your way of working down once, and you are not betting on one brand.
An artifact is the thing Claude makes, not the instructions for making it. Anthropic defines it as anything Claude makes that you would put in front of someone: a document, a deck, a small tool. The skill is how the quote gets written; the artifact is the quote on your screen. And a command, in Claude Code, the programmer’s version of Claude, is a shortcut you trigger by name. The Claude Code docs say custom commands have been merged into skills, so you can ignore commands unless you ever open that tool.
How do you build your first skill in one evening?
Which job did you retype the most this month? Start there, and do not start by writing. Do the job once with Claude the ordinary way, which is what Anthropic’s authoring guide recommends: work a real task and notice what you keep explaining. Then:
- Pick one job you repeat and dislike. The guide says the best skills solve a specific, repeatable task and stay focused on one workflow. A quote is a good first one. So is the weekly post.
- Do it once, out loud, with a real example. Paste a finished quote of yours with the customer’s name taken out, add the notes from the job, and fix the draft until it sounds like you at your best.
- Then ask for the skill. Say: create a skill that captures this. The authoring guide says Claude handles the skill format natively and generates the SKILL.md with its frontmatter, the two labels at the top. You do not write any code.
- Read the two labels. The name takes lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, and the words claude and anthropic are reserved, so writing-customer-quotes works and claude-quotes does not. The description should say what the skill does and when to use it, written in the third person.
- Zip the folder and upload it. The help center says the folder name must match the skill’s name and the ZIP should hold the folder itself, not loose files. Then Customize, Skills, and the plus button.
- Test it on three real jobs. Anthropic says to try several prompts that should trigger it, and to rewrite the description if Claude does not use the skill when you expect it to.
The first time Claude hands back a quote with the tax line blank and the warranty line worded your way, read it out loud to check. It will sound like you on a good day. It is not available on Windows or on Free.
What a skill will not do for you
It will not always open. Claude decides from the description whether to pull the file, which is why the troubleshooting advice is blunt: name the skill in your request if Claude is ignoring it. And it does not know your prices. Anthropic’s authoring guide says to avoid time-sensitive information that will become wrong, and Missouri moves local sales tax rates at the start of a quarter. A rate typed into a skill is a small lie waiting for next quarter. Tell the skill to ask, or to leave a blank.
It stays with you. The help center says custom skills you upload are not visible to colleagues until you share them, and the developer docs say custom skills do not sync across surfaces: one uploaded to claude.ai is not on the API or in Claude Code. They add that on claude.ai each team member uploads separately, though Team and Enterprise admins have a way to provision skills for everyone.
And a stranger’s skill is software you have never read. The developer docs say to use skills only from trusted sources, the ones you made or got from Anthropic, because a malicious one can direct Claude to run code in ways the description never mentions. Treat a free skill pack from a social post like a USB stick from a parking lot.
