Eighteen independent coffee shops are open in St. Charles County, each verified against its own website. The three that roast their own beans: Mocha Point (343 N Main St, Yemeni single-origin, roasted in-house), Course Coffee Roasters (1218 N 2nd St, Frenchtown) and Upshot Coffee (roasts at 45 Jason Ct on a 10kg Mill City roaster; cafes in Cottleville and at 816 N Kingshighway). That’s the whole problem in one number. There are plenty of recommendations. What’s missing is any list that’s been checked recently — three of the shops still being recommended on live, indexed pages right now have closed.
So we checked all of them, one at a time, against each shop’s own website. Eighteen independents are open in St. Charles County. Here they are, sorted by what you actually want out of a morning.
What is the best coffee shop in St. Charles, MO?
For coffee itself, the three roasters: Mocha Point (343 N Main St) roasts in-house and pours Yemeni single-origin; Course Coffee Roasters (1218 N 2nd St) roasts in Frenchtown; Upshot Coffee roasts on a 10kg Mill City roaster and pours it at the Brake Shop, 816 N Kingshighway. For the setting, Bike Stop Cafe at 701 S Riverside sits across from the riverfront with its own bakery. For early, Crooked Tree (559 First Capitol) opens at 6am weekdays. For late, Lydia’s (1735 S River Rd) runs to 11pm Friday and Saturday.
The three that actually roast
Most coffee shops buy their beans from somebody else. That’s not a knock — Picasso’s buys from St. Louis-area micro-roasters and does well by them. But if you want coffee roasted in the county you’re standing in, there are three.
Mocha Point Yemeni Coffee Co., 343 N Main St. Sources directly from small farms and roasts in-house. Yemeni coffee is a genuinely different cup from the Latin American beans most American shops pour — older varietals, usually processed dry, and it tends to land somewhere spiced and winey rather than bright. Worth ordering black once before you decide what you think.
Course Coffee Roasters, 1218 N 2nd St in Frenchtown. Bags start around $20. Check the day before you drive over — they’re closed Mondays and close at noon on Tuesdays.
Upshot Coffee roasts at 45 Jason Ct on a 10kg Mill City roaster and serves it at two county cafes: the flagship at 5326 Highway N in historic Cottleville, open since 2019, and the Brake Shop at 816 N Kingshighway, which occupies a 1950s service station with the garage doors still in place. Four cafes total, all local.
Historic Main Street, and what’s actually on it
Main Street is the reason most people come to St. Charles, and it’s where the coffee-shop question usually starts. Four independents are on the street itself.
Picasso’s Coffee House, 101 N Main St, has been there since 2003 — the default answer to this question for two decades, and the one that turns up first on nearly every ranking. It runs late: 7:30am to 9pm Thursday through Saturday. There’s a second location at 1650 Beale St.
Frontier Perk Cafe, 108 S Main St, is open Wednesday through Sunday, 8 to 3, with a view toward the Missouri River. Their own site is inconsistent about the street number — the contact page says 108, an older page header says 336 — so call if you’re meeting someone there.
Saint Charles Coffee & Creperie, 336 S Main St, does what the name says and takes orders online. Mocha Point is at 343 N Main.
One block off, at 701 S Riverside Dr, Bike Stop Cafe is the most useful building on this list. It’s a coffee shop, a bike shop and a bakery — the bakery is up at 1312 N 2nd St — and it rents bikes and runs shuttles for the Katy Trail, which passes directly outside. Open at 6am Mondays and until 9pm Friday and Saturday. If you have out-of-town guests and one free morning, this is the plan.
Also walkable: Sucrose at 700 S Fifth St, a scratch European and German bakery that keeps short hours (Tuesday to Friday 7 to 3, Saturday 8 to 3), and Crooked Tree Coffee House at 559 First Capitol Dr, which sells beans by the pound and opens earlier than anyone else here.
Early birds and night owls
If you need coffee before 7am, the county gives you three real options. Crooked Tree opens at 6am Monday through Friday and 7am on weekends, closing at 6pm daily. Bike Stop Cafe opens at 6am Mondays. Isabelle’s Coffee House at 3751 New Town Blvd opens at 6:30am.
Evening is thinner, which is true of most of the metro. Lydia’s by Sugar & Slice, 1735 S River Rd, Suite 190, runs until 11pm on Friday and Saturday and pours cocktails alongside the coffee and pastry, though it’s closed Tuesdays. Picasso’s goes to 9pm Thursday through Saturday. Bike Stop does the same Friday and Saturday.
There is one possible exception worth a phone call. Mocha Point on Main Street is listed in several places as running to 10pm on weeknights and midnight on Friday and Saturday, which would make it the latest coffee in the county by a wide margin — but the shop doesn’t publish hours on its own website, and the third-party listings disagree with each other. Call before you count on it.
Coffee that comes with something else
Several of the best rooms in the county aren’t strictly coffee shops.
La Belle Vie, also called The Cafe at Frenchtown, at 1200 N 2nd St, pours coffee early and wine later, with free wifi and no Monday hours. Pink Willow Café at 5523 Oak St in Cottleville does mimosa flights and boozy cold brew, Wednesday to Sunday 8 to 3 — and posts a 90-minute table limit when there’s a waitlist, which is worth knowing before you settle in with a laptop.
Ellbee’s General Store, 6 W Main St in Wentzville, runs a full coffee bar attached to an ice cream and candy counter, with mini-golf next door and longer hours in summer. Closed Sundays. Clarke Parker Coffee + Mercantile at 1151 Century Tel Dr in Wentzville is family-owned, open weekday mornings, and also runs a mobile espresso cart for events.
The Bridge Coffee House at 3257-1 Domain St in New Town is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a fair-trade market attached — your four dollars goes somewhere different than it does elsewhere. Closes at noon Sundays.
Southern Grace Coffee at 20 Meadows Circle Dr in Lake St. Louis is one of three locations, the others in Troy and Elsberry. They don’t publish hours anywhere authoritative, so check their Facebook page before driving out.
If you just want coffee without leaving the car, Mudslingers at 1423 Jungermann Rd in St. Peters is a drive-thru run by local owners — though Mudslingers itself is a national brand-licensing system, not a homegrown independent, so we’re listing it as what it is.
New Town is quietly the second-best coffee stop in the county
Most visitors never leave Main Street, which means they miss the only other place in St. Charles County with two independent coffee houses within walking distance of each other.
New Town, the planned neighborhood north of the city off Highway 370, has Isabelle’s Coffee House at 3751 New Town Blvd — open at 6:30am, one of the three earliest in the county — and The Bridge Coffee House at 3257-1 Domain St, the nonprofit with the fair-trade market. Two shops, two genuinely different reasons to go, a few minutes apart.
It’s a reasonable morning if you’re coming up from St. Louis County and want something other than the Main Street crowd, and it pairs with the lakes and walking paths the neighborhood was built around.
Where the county genuinely has nothing
This is the part other guides won’t tell you, because admitting a gap makes for a shorter article.
O’Fallon has no verifiable independent coffee shop right now. Its two best candidates both operated at 111 N Main and both closed — Alpha & Omega Roasting, whose domain now redirects to a brewery that makes no mention of coffee, and Tex-Mo Coffee Co., whose domain no longer resolves at all. That storefront has turned over twice. There is one more O’Fallon cafe we couldn’t confirm either way because its website refused every attempt to read it, so treat O’Fallon as an open question rather than a desert.
Weldon Spring and Dardenne Prairie have no verified independents. Those are chain markets at the moment.
And St. Peters is thinner than its population suggests — a county of that size should support more than it does.
If you own a coffee shop in any of those three, that is not bad news for you. It’s the opposite.
Three that closed, and are still being recommended
Check the date on any coffee list before you trust it. As of this writing, all three of these still appear on live pages as though you could go this afternoon.
Peace Love Coffee, the vegan cafe at 524 S Main, closed around September 2024. Tex-Mo Coffee Co. and Alpha & Omega Roasting, both at 111 N Main in O’Fallon, are gone.
We mention them by name so you don’t drive there. This is also why every shop above was checked against its own website rather than copied from another list — the copying is how a closed cafe stays “open” online for two years.
A practical note on hours
Independent coffee shops change hours more often than they change websites, and several here keep genuinely unusual schedules — closed Mondays, noon closes, seasonal summer hours. The hours above came from each business’s own site on the day this was written. Call ahead if you’re driving any distance, especially on a Monday or Tuesday.
