Only six independent coffee shops in the entire St. Louis metro close at 8pm or later, and none of them are in the city. Latest: Qahwatea Coffee (15957 Manchester Rd, Ellisville) and Mocha Point (343 N Main St, St. Charles), both Yemeni coffeehouses reported open to midnight Fri–Sat. Most reliably verified: The Annex (8122 Big Bend Blvd, Webster Groves) to 9pm Mon–Sat. We checked every independent coffee shop in the metro we could verify. Six are open past 8pm. Only two run past 10pm — and both of those are Yemeni coffeehouses in the outer suburbs, not in the city. That’s the actual state of late-night coffee here, and it’s a more interesting story than a list.
Where can I get coffee late at night in St. Louis?
The latest verified independent options are Qahwatea Coffee in Ellisville (15957 Manchester Rd), reported open to 10pm on weeknights and midnight Friday and Saturday, and Mocha Point on Main Street in St. Charles, listed with similar hours. In St. Louis County proper, The Annex Coffee & Foods at 8122 Big Bend Blvd in Webster Groves closes at 9pm Monday through Saturday and is the most reliably verified late option. The Wolf Cafe in Ballwin runs to 9pm Tuesday through Friday. Inside the city limits, there is currently no independent coffeehouse open past 8pm.
The six that are actually open late
These are the only independents we could verify closing at 8pm or later anywhere in the metro.
Qahwatea Coffee, 15957 Manchester Rd, Ellisville. A Yemeni coffeehouse built deliberately as an alcohol-free late-night alternative — hand-stitched Yemeni wicker chairs, cushion seating, carved Moroccan wood panels, murals. Reported hours are 10pm Monday through Thursday, midnight Friday and Saturday. Two cautions: the business has no website at all, so those hours come from a magazine feature and listings rather than the owners, and the Sunday hours conflict between sources. Call.
Mocha Point Yemeni Coffee Co., 343 N Main St, St. Charles. Roasts its own beans, pours Yemeni single-origin, family-owned since 2023. Listed at 10pm weeknights and midnight on weekends — but its own website publishes no hours, and third-party listings disagree. Treat as promising, not certain.
The Annex Coffee & Foods, 8122 Big Bend Blvd, Webster Groves. Open to 9pm Monday through Saturday and 8pm Sunday, with the hours published on their own site — the most trustworthy entry on this list. Heated, covered patio; cocktails; a Half Pint ice cream counter under the same roof. In the Old Orchard district, so there’s somewhere to walk afterward.
The Wolf Cafe, 15480 Clayton Rd, Suite 210, Ballwin. Open to 9pm — but only Tuesday through Friday. Saturday it closes at 3pm, and it’s shut Sunday and Monday. Check the day.
La Bonne Bouchée, 12344 Olive Blvd, Creve Coeur. A French patisserie open since 1981. The bakery and café run to 8:30pm Tuesday through Saturday; the restaurant side closes at 2:30pm. Two different schedules in one building — don’t confuse them.
Corner Cafe at Greentrails, 14276 Ladue Rd, Chesterfield, has the most unusual schedule in the metro and it’s worth understanding rather than just reading. It’s certified Kosher by the Vaad, so the week is shaped around Shabbat: open until 8:30pm Sunday through Thursday, closing early at 5pm Friday, and then opening at 10:30pm on Saturday night and running to midnight. If you want coffee at 11pm on a Saturday in west county, this is a genuine and slightly wonderful option.
What happened to the city’s late-night coffee
If you’ve lived here a while, the names on that list are all wrong. The late-night coffee places were in the city.
Coffee Cartel in the Central West End was open twenty-four hours and lasted twenty-two years before closing in 2018. Café Ventana on West Pine has closed. Harvey’s Coffee & Cocktails on Olive has closed.
The two survivors changed. MoKaBe’s on Arsenal, a Tower Grove institution and once a reliable late hang, now closes at 3pm and is shut Mondays. Meshuggah on Delmar, the other name everyone remembers, now closes in the early afternoon.
Older articles still list all of these as late-night options. They are not. If you see a St. Louis coffee guide recommending Coffee Cartel, you’ve found a page nobody has checked since roughly 2017.
So the honest summary: the metro’s late-night coffee scene didn’t shrink so much as it relocated to the outer ring and changed nationality. The two latest-closing coffeehouses in the region are both Yemeni, both opened recently, and both sit well outside the city — in Ellisville and on Main Street in St. Charles. That’s a real shift in where this city drinks coffee after dark, and almost nobody has written it down.
Why Yemeni coffeehouses close so much later
This isn’t a coincidence, and it’s worth understanding if you’re going.
In much of the Arab world the coffeehouse is an evening social institution rather than a morning fuel stop — you go after dinner, you stay, you talk for hours, and nobody is drinking. That model transplants directly: a room built for long alcohol-free evenings naturally stays open until midnight, because midnight is when it’s busiest.
It also means the experience is different from an American cafe at 10pm. Expect a full room rather than an empty one, food alongside the coffee, and no expectation that you order and leave. If you have been looking for somewhere to spend a Friday evening that isn’t a bar, this is the most direct answer the metro currently has.
The early end: nobody opens before 6am
The other half of this question is the morning, and the answer is tidier. Six independents open at 6am, and not one shop in the metro publishes an opening time earlier than that. If a guide claims a 5am independent, it’s unsourced.
The 6am list: Teleo Coffee, 132 W Monroe Ave in Kirkwood, Monday through Saturday. RevoCup Coffee, 9200 Olive Blvd in Olivette, weekdays. The Ground STL, 109 Ballpark Dr in Ballwin, weekdays — it’s a coffee shop and a plant shop at once. Kaldi’s Ellisville drive-thru, 147 Clarkson Rd, every day. Two more open at 6am according to listings but don’t confirm it on their own sites: Rosemary Coffee on Big Bend in Twin Oaks and La Finca on Manchester in The Grove.
Worth noting for the west county crowd: Kaldi’s Chesterfield at 17211 Chesterfield Airport Rd opens at 6:30am, the earliest inside Chesterfield proper.
If you actually wanted somewhere to work
A lot of late-coffee searching is really laptop searching, so here is the honest version of that answer.
Almost no coffee shop in this metro publishes a laptop policy, and none of the ones we checked mention power outlets on their own website. Every “tons of outlets, great for working” line in a competing list is somebody’s impression, not a stated fact.
Two things we can state. Kaldi’s Chesterfield advertises free wifi, ample parking and a reservable cupping room for meetings on its own site — the clearest work-friendly claim available anywhere in the region. And Living Room Coffee & Kitchen in Maplewood states on its own site that it does not offer public wifi on weekends, so its community can use the room. That’s not a criticism — it’s a shop being clear about what it’s for. Just don’t plan your Saturday there.
Beyond those two, call and ask. It takes thirty seconds and it beats carrying a laptop somewhere with three outlets and a ninety-minute table limit.
If nothing above is open
Past midnight, or on a Sunday when most of these are closed, the independent option is gone and it’s worth saying so plainly rather than sending you on a drive.
What’s left after that is the drive-thru tier — the national chains and the drive-thru-only brands, several of which run far later than any independent here. It’s not the same experience and this guide isn’t going to pretend otherwise, but at 1am on a Tuesday it’s the honest answer.
The other realistic move is a restaurant or bar that serves coffee, particularly in the Central West End, Soulard and The Grove, where kitchens run later than any cafe in the city. If what you actually want is a table, a warm drink and two hours of conversation, that’s where the city still delivers — it just stopped happening at coffeehouses.

This is the one topic where a stale guide costs you a real evening.
